So, this blog represents a journey. The pursuit of growing our contracting business.
Right off the bat there are a couple questions to ask:”Where are we now?” & “Where are we going?”

One of the 7 Habit’s of Highly Effective People, according to author Stephen Covey, is to “begin with the end in mind.”

If you’re a contractor, what would success look like to you? What are you aiming for? For many of us, we’re content to just make the ends meet. Others want to have teams of employees and dominate their marketplace.

Until we identify the goal, we cannot begin to identify the steps to get there. Of course, there may be a million steps, but we can still get there if we are persistent.

I think about this sometimes when I’m beginning a remodeling project. I have to consider the finished product and what the fixtures and trim will be like in order to do the framing and electrical correctly. However, sometimes it can be daunting to begin a large project. I may even feel overwhelmed at times. Still, if I’ll just take it a step a time, I will get to the finish line.

I’m always impressed by people who achieve a goal after diligent training or persistence over the long haul. I felt it today when I saw a portion of the IAAF World Championships this afternoon. These athletes had trained all their life to be the best runner possible and win the medal. It was amazing to see them perform and accomplish their goal.

So, what if we treated our business like we were training for a world championship? What would that look like? Would we have an ‘arena’ of screaming fans amazed by our performance?

When you’re at the beginning, there are so many choices to make and so many paths that could be traveled. It seems important to pick one and travel it well. Let’s give it some thought and not rush past it.

I’m going to take some time considering this. Join me, won’t you?
